Human Imaging
Our mission is to provide magnetic resonance imaging services for research studies utilizing a Siemens 3 Tesla Allegra Head-only MRI system.
Services available include:
- High resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
- Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
- Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI)
- Perfusion Imaging
- Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS)
- To schedule time on the 3T MRI
To Initiate a Human Study:
To initiate a study using the 3T MRI scanner, please send the following information to Kathy Wilber (Kathy_Wilber@med.unc.edu).
- Name of Study
- Name of PI in charge of study
- Account information for billing scanner time (including department to send bills to and a business office contact person).
- Any and all relevant information regarding your study's particular scanning needs and requirements.
- Copy of your IRB/IACUC approval memo and copies of the approved IRB application and consent form(s).
Once Kathy Wilber has all the information listed, contact Sylvia Toth for scheduling.

Scheduling Information:
Time may be scheduled from 8:00 AM- 7:00 PM Monday through Thursday and from 7 AM- 3 PM on Friday. To check availability you may view the calendar at: http://152.19.82.67/3t_mri/3t_mri/
Cost:
BRIC imaging services are a recharge operation and must charge fees to cover the cost of operation.
3T MRI Machine Time Charge:
Federally funded research studies are partially supported through a NIH Shared Instrumentation Grant (#1S10RR017212) and are therefore charged for machine time at a reduced rate. Current 3T MRI machine time rates:
- For federally sponsored grants, $400/hour
- For industry sponsored grants and contracts, $650/ hour
The machine time charge is for the use of the 3T MRI scanner and is assessed for the total time that the 3T MR scan room is used for your study in 15 minute increments. The machine time charge does not include: data analysis, clinical diagnostic review, or contrast media. When planning studies that will require clinical diagnostic review and/or contrast media injection, please contact Keith Smith, MD,PhD for information about the professional fees associated with these services.
Contrast Media Charge:
- 10 ml vial (body weight under 50 kg) $40.00
- 15 ml vial (body weight under 75 kg) $60.00
- 20 ml vial (body weight over 75 kg) $80.00
Data Management:
A single copy of study images on a CD, with or without viewing software, can be provided to the investigator without additional charge. Any additional data management, including clinical trial paperwork and data transmission, will be billed at $40/ hour in one hour increments.
Billing:
Principal investigators will be invoiced monthly for charges associated with their use of the 3T MRI scanner.
